Getting Around In Italy
Getting around in Italy is what makes an Italian vacation a truly enjoyable experience. From the time you arrive
at one of the international airports in Italy, you can let someone else worry about traffic woes.
Unlike the United States where only good size cities have public transportation, Italy's transportation system
extends to almost every city, town and village. There are few places you can go in Italy that can't be reached by
car, bus, train, plane or boat.
The major airports in Rome, Milan, Pisa and Venice are served by either bus, train or both and by taxis to take
you into the city center. If you will be staying in town for a period of time, taxis will take you directly to your
living accommodations while the bus or train usually deposit passengers at the main train station. From there,
transportation around the city by cab, bus or subway will easily take you anywhere you want to go.
Here we will explore the most popular ways to get around Italy.

For the tourist, a car is perhaps the worst way to see Italy, especially major towns
and cities. City centers are off limits to nonresidents' vehicles, so they are pretty much useless.
Some of the highest gas prices in Europe, driving restrictions in cities, and the Italians' erratic
approach to driving make a car more of a liability than an asset when touring Italy. Public
transportation is both cheap and reliable. Use it and save your sanity.
